ADSL -
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, type of DSL connection that
offers higher download speeds than upload speeds.
SDSL -
Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line, type of DSL connection that
offers the same download and upload speeds.
VDSL -
Very-high-speed Digital Subscriber Line, a DSL service offering
fast data connections for corporate use.
ISDN -
Integrated Services Digital Network, one of the first iterations
of braodband.
Router -
A type of network equipment that works like a modem, used to
control the flow of incoming and outgoing data from your broadband
connection
to
any number
of computers.
Cable
modem - This is a modem used to connect the computer
to the coaxial-fibre network cables that is used to carry both
television and data signals.
Base
Station -
A type of router that uses wireless protocol instead of netwrok
cables in order to share the internet connection between a
number of computers. A good example would be Apple's Airport.
IP
address - this is the defining tag which identifies the host computer
on the Internet. This includes identifying the network being
used
to access the Internet, as well as the host computer accessing
the data across that network.
